Mean old man, always has been,
Younger, he was meaner still,
What gives him the right
To be so ornery and cantankerous?
She ought to know,
'Been with him all these years.
Did they ever have a really nice day?
Alone, maybe, but not together.
How can they stay in the same house?
Miserable with, miserable without,
S'pose she understands him.
And maybe in those earlier years
When they were very young,
They did love each other
And shared their dreams,.
He is what he is . . .
And she is still holding on.
